Melissa's Journal Entry March 20-21
I have just bought a domain for my old therapy faq, which I maintained from 1994-1997. You can reach it by going to http://been.at/therapy or http://therapyfaq.cc or got to http://therapyfaq.cc/old.html to see the old version. Check back with me soon and I will tell you when the new version has been finished. In the meantime, I have decided to do things. I am going to list here some sites you can use to help you make your own site, and a list of useful therapy resources I think are worthwhile. Thus, this entry is going to be a bare-bones "old-skool" effort.
First of all, one great place to go is Commission Junction at http://cj.com and here you will find a way to make some money with your site. With hundreds of merchants to choose from, this site manages your accounts, and allows you to put all kinds of banners on your site. It is a very convenient way to get a start. Another place to go for affiliate programs is http://reporting.net and you will get basically the same start with different companies.
Next, the sites http://diaryland.com and http://pitas.com allow you easy ways to have a website without having to do much work. You don't need to know html, maintain a domain, or pay for a server. However, if you want a free website, with more than one choice of domain name (or using your own domain), try http://freeservers.com or http://freewebsites.com and you will be able to start right away.
If you want to start a message board, two easy ways are with the sites http://www.ezboard.com/ or http://clubs.yahoo.com. They are both very different in style and what you can do with them, but they both have their advantages.
Another great program is through http://come.to where you can get a neat domain name that forwards to your regular domain. Also, go to http://spot.cc and get an unique domain name you might not be able to get as a .com domain. For either of these you need an email account, and if you need another one, check out http://juno.com or http://yahoo.com for some great free accounts.
Of course if you don't know html, but want to learn, you can
always check out About.com's HTML resources.
Okay, on to the therapy sites. When I started my therapy FAQ I knew all the top resources on psychotherapy, and many of the webmasters personally. Of course, a lot has changed in the last few years, so most of what is out there now is really new.
Anyway, one great place to look for a therapist online (which
I have done) is at http://www.planet-therapy.com/locator/
where you can search nationally. One person I know on the net
that offers online counselling off and on is at http://www.netpsych.com/share/
and he has lots of resources also. Or you can go to About.com's Mental Health Resources where he is
an online editor. Another person I know pretty well is John
Grohol, at http://psychcentral.com/
and his site really rocks.
Of course, the http://www.apa.org site is a great place to start if you want to know more about psychology in general. They also list the ethics of therapy, which is good to know. If you want to find a whole bunch of resources, go to the psychotherapy webring.
The site http://www.aboutpsychotherapy.com is a great place to go with your general questions about therapy until my own FAQ is revised. Or go to http://www.allaboutcounseling.com/ for more info about counseling in general. Another place with general info is http://www.cybershrink.org/ and they have lots of stuff.
Two good clubs to go to are http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/mentalwellness and http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/clinicalpsychologyinsider. Of course, my new message board can be reached at http://ezboard.com/btherapyfaq and that will be a great forum for therapy issues.
Anyway, that is a good start for now. So, go build a website, or go into therapy. Both are good for you, and they might just go hand in hand. I am going to be busy cleaning and getting ready for Maricel's visit, but otherwise, you will get cool new pictures soon.
Have a great day!
Melissa
