welcome to my new journal entry
march 13. today's theme is madness, or more
accurately, in dealing with madness. In the
spirit of this theme, the background music is
Nirvana's "Lithium." For those who do
not know, lithium is not an antidepressant link
Prozac. It is a drug used for manic-depression
(aka bipolar disorder). Right now I am on lithium
and an antidepressant. Another little known fact
about this illness is that you have to get your
blood taken once a month in order to make sure
the lithium level is correct and not toxic.
Additionally, if a person who does not have the
illness takes lithium takes it, nothing happens.
In otherwords, it is not brain candy. I don't get
high off of this drug, nor can I get addicted to
it. A lot people think that taking a psychoactive
drug is a crutch, but for many people, it is
neccessary for survival. I liken it to insulin
for a diabetic. The body is missing something,
and in order to function properly, it must be
replaced artificially. In my case it is
neurotransmitters. Today was my monthly blood
draw, which I detest. I have very small veins and
an incompetent nurse who can't do a good stick.
Luckily she gave up quickly because she wanted to
go to lunch. It was excruciating, that one stick,
and I ran to the bathroom and threw up. That
happens everytime for me. I went next door to a
lab, and the person did it perfectly the first
time. How anyway can not see this option as a
last resort, and not a weak-minded crutch, is
beyond me. Another reason I have to get my blood
taken is that I have hypo and hyper thyroidism.
This also affects my moods, and I have to monitor
where I am at to know what medicine to take. I
know this sounds very attractive--but it is my
life. In the next entry I will be a little more
cheery--after I take my pills. |

Tribune
Acquiring Times Mirror for $8 Billion

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The Tribune
Co. (NYSE:TRB - news) said
Monday it agreed to buy the Los Angeles-based
Times Mirror Co. (NYSE:TMC - news) in an $8
billion deal that creates the nation's
third-largest newspaper company -- a media empire
that stretches from coast-to-coast, from
newspaper stands to cyberspace.
Once the deal is wrapped up,
Tribune will have 11 daily newspapers, 22
television stations and four radio stations with
combined annual revenues of $7 billion.
The proposed transaction will
end 119 years of local ownership of the Los
Angeles Times by the Otis and Chandler families,
and makes Los Angeles the largest city in the
country without a locally owned metropolitan
daily.
I put the
above article here because it directly affects my
friend maricel who works at the LA Times. I can't
believe how many mergers are happening. It is my
belief that in the end, one person owns the whole
shebang.
