Melissa | Journal Entry February 12-13

Welcome to journal entry February 12-13. Happy almost Valentine's Day--I am already getting in the mood, as you can see by the background! The music is Madonna's "Frozen."

Yesterday in class we watched the Fisher King. This was a film that came out in the 1980s, and I saw it while I was in high school. It stars Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges, and Terry Gilliam (Brazil) directed it. When I first saw it, I was totally confused by it (I came in late, so that didn't help), but this time I could understand it more for two reasons. Robin Williams plays a man who goes mad after the tragic death of his wife. He becomes a knight who is in search for the holy grail, partly because he is trying to cope with his pain and grief. The red knight which threatens him in his imagination essentially is the personafication of his own fears and rage about the murder of his wife. The images of the red knight pursuing him, which no one else can see, reminds me of the film I Never Promised You A Rose Garden. In both, a secret life unfolds onscreen which haunts the main character, and prevents he or she from truly interacting with the other people in their life. This theme of madness slowly eating away at a person's soul is one that I have first hand knowledge of, and so I appreciate it now much more than the first time I saw it. Additionally, although I saw it in my King Arthur course, it struck me as much applicable to my Don Quixote class. Both The Fisher King and DQ are influenced by King Arthur stories, but the theme of madness in the movie appears to be much more quixotic in nature than Arthurian. So with DQ in my mind already, I watched the film quietly comparing the two characters who are both on a quest, but come to different ends (DQ dies, while Robin Williams prevails).

On a lighter note, I got three new items from the store today which makes me happy--joy in simply things, and all that. The first is Raspberry Orbit Smackers Lip Smoothie by Bonne Bell. This is essentially made for children (ages 6 and up, it reads), but it outdoes many of the lip colors made by other cosmetic companies. It taste goods, and gives the nicest soft shine with a pink hue that doesn't look painted on. Additionally I bought Rose Mist Dry Body Spray by Sarah Micheals. This product is alchohol free, not oiley, and can be used as a moisturizer, shine, or scent for your hair or body. The scent I bought today smells exactly like pure roses, and is not heavy like many rose-scented colognes. Finally, I bought this nice vase with he Chinese character for Peace on it. It is very elegant, and it was also a great deal. Also, today I added more to my birthday wish list, and I have been exploring the stores at Yahoo! Shopping in order to add even more items.

Today I wore my exxon shirt which I bought in college, which you can see up at top. This shirt makes me laugh, and it really makes people look twice.

Finally, I decided that in addition to my Shakespeare class on Saturdays this next semester that I am going to take writing classes at Rice University. They are:

Writing Your Personal Memoirs
Eight Wednesdays, March 1-April 19, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Limited enrollment.
563f
Writing for the Theatre
Five Tuesdays, April 18-May 16, 6:30-9:30 p.m. Limited enrollment
560f

They look interesting because of my desire to learn more about two types of writing I have not explore--theatre, and the memoir.

So, I will have a super duper journal entry ready to celebrate V-day. Bye until then....
